For many years, I had been working with the "negative self talk" I had. In the psychology workshops I attended, they call most of it EGO and in Coaching, we call them Gremlins.
Gremlins exist in us in layers and they have even built and strengthened over time throughout our lives… and they are usually very hidden in our subconscious minds… so we may not even be aware of them and how they affect how we see ourselves…
One good way to remove them is to do a Gremlin exercise or some other exercise to gain awareness about them cos only when they are hidden are they powerful. Once they float to our awareness, we have the power of choice to choose a different outcome.
Going through gremlin exercise during coaching is a way of gaining awareness and awareness is the step one of being able to remove them.. sometimes u get to remove a big layer and sometimes a small one. Doesn’t mean if it comes back the exercises didn’t work… 😂
I have been working with my gremlins with awareness for 15 years and I still catch them coming up sometimes:) so it’s perfectly normal for you to experience that…
Someone shared with me story of the wise owl and alligator (there is a book about it but I forgot the name) and I think that’s a helpful way to work constantly on our gremlins… to always be aware of whether this thought is from our higher mind or ego and make a choice about what is it we want. As we become more aware and practice this often, it will be easier to catch ourselves and choose..
Alternatively and paradoxically, acceptance can be a way out too. Choosing to accept that we believe that about ourselves allows us to stop trying to fight it cos it becomes easy to move forward anyway. Eg if I stopped fighting my belief that I am not lovable enough and just accept that I have this belief, then all the energy I used fighting myself can now be used elsewhere and I could choose to use it to love myself;) Now that you know this, how will you respond to your negative self talk?
Are you going through something similar?
